Witness History. On September 3rd 1967 all Swedish traffic had to change the habits of decades, and swap to driving on the right-hand side of the road. Back in 1967 the decision was taken to switch Sweden’s driving side to align itself to the rest of the continent. An estimated 1.5-million cars were on the country’s roads at the time and the number was expected to increase to 2.8-million by 1975.

As you might imagine, this switch was anything but easy. The decision to move to the other side of the road was not taken lightly. Road traffic in Sweden switched from driving on the left side of the road to the right (Jan Collsiöö — 1967) eptember 3, 1967. In Sweden, this date is remembered as “Dagen H” (“H Day”). On that April 20, 2017 One of my all-time favorite automotive stories is that of "H Day," short for "Hogertrafik Day," which is the day in 1967 that Sweden switched from driving on the left side of the street (as they do in the U.K., Japan and Australia) to the right side of the street (as they do in the United States, Canada and China). Dagen H (H day) was the day, 3 September 1967, on which traffic in Sweden switched from driving on the left-hand side of the road to the right. The “H” stands for “Högertrafik”, the Swedish word for “right traffic”.
The change was made at 0500 on Sunday 3 September 1967. All private traffic was banned between 0100 and 0600 and there was a total stop on all traffic at 0450, with a countdown on the radio to 0500. The speed limit in urban areas was lowered from 50km/h to 40km/h for a period of time after the change. Some photos from the historic event:
